This course enables learners to develop their interest in and enjoyment of literature and literary studies as they read widely and independently both set texts and others that they have selected for themselves. Students will engage creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them; develop and effectively apply their knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation in their own creative writing; and explore the contexts of the texts they are reading and others’ interpretations of them.

Drama:  Tragedy: Shakespeare, ‘Othello’ and Williams, ‘A Streetcar Named Desire’
Prose: either Women: Woolf, ‘Mrs Dalloway’ & Hardy, ‘Tess of the D’Urbervilles’ or Crime: Collins, ‘The Moonstone’ & Capote, ‘In Cold Blood’.
Poetry:  Anthology: Poems of the Decade and Rossetti: Selected poems.

Component 1: Drama 30%  2 hours 15 mins: 2 essays
Component 2: Poetry 30%  2 hours 15 mins: 2 essays
Component 3: Prose 20%  1 hour 15 mins: 1 essay

The coursework component is worth 20% and the topic is chosen by the students.  They must choose two texts which are related by theme.
