GCSE Extended Maths
In order to stretch the most able KS4 Maths students at Dene Magna, we are now offering an additional qualification to the highest achieving year 11s this year. GCSE Extended Maths is a new qualification offered by Edexcel that compliments the statutory GCSE Maths qualification. Importantly, rather than teaching new content, it deepens the students' understanding of GCSE topics.
This exam is designed to sit above the standard GCSE, and requires that students sit 2 more exam papers during the summer exam season in year 11. It is our desire to see our most able students challenged in order to deepen their understanding, to further their passion for Maths and to provide a bridge qualification that links GCSE learning to A Level content.
Students who achieved high grades in their end of year 10 trial GCSEs, are invited to participate in learning this deeper content. Students choosing this have additional Maths lessons (outside of normal school hours), have significant tasks to complete in their own time, and have an allocated 'drop in' support session within the school timetable. Using a wide range of resources and past papers, students wrestle with challenging content and in doing so, become more independent in seeking help and finding solutions.
The current year 11 Extended class has 16 students being taught by Miss Keitch.
