GCSE Extended Maths

In order to stretch the most able KS4 Maths students at Dene Magna, we are now offering an additional qualification to the highest achieving year 11s this year.   We are trialling GCSE Extended Maths is an extra-curricular option that compliments the statutory GCSE Maths qualification and is offered to a selection of the most able KS4 students.

This exam is designed to sit between GCSE Maths and A Level Maths, and requires that students sit 2 more exam papers during the summer exam season in year 11.  It is our desire to see our most able students challenged in order to deepen their understanding, to further their passion for Maths and to provide a bridge qualification that links GCSE learning to A Level content.

Students who achieved a grade 7 or higher in their end of year 10 trial GCSEs, will be invited to participate in this trial scheme. For those who accept the invitation, extra lessons are offered (outside of normal school hours) to cover the additional Maths content that will prepare them for this advanced qualification. In addition, students are also given a substantial number of independent tasks to complete in their own time, and the teacher will guide students through a number of past papers too.

We are currently planning to start the second intake of students from year 10 in time to sit this additional qualification during summer 2025.

If this trial is successful, we plan to make this Extended Maths GCSE part of our regular offering at Dene Magna.
