Hours: 37 hours per week (term time only)

Salary: Grade 8, points 26 - 30 (£34,834 - £38,223) FTE 0.87 equates to £30,306 - £33,254

MAIN PURPOSE

The Active Learning Coach will be based in our new social and emotional provision, which will provide support for some of our most vulnerable and challenging young people through a focus on sociable and accessible physical activity. Identified students will access a number of sessions, depending on their individual needs as part of their timetabled week. The Active Learning Coach will build a curriculum based around sport and being active which will help support students' physical and mental health, as well as creating an opportunity to build key social skills. The benefits of being physically active include improved energy and sleep, better decision making, improvements in mood, lower levels of stress and anxiety and a reduction in the negative side effects of medication. This exciting new provision will impact on both the learning and social/emotional needs of key students and will allow all to succeed academically whilst also supporting them to develop positive relationships and essential social skills. The provision will have support from the equivalent of one full-time Teaching Assistant. 

The Active Learning Coach will provide effective leadership of the Teaching Assistants working alongside them who work within this provision, to: 

  • Assist the Headteacher, SENCo and teaching staff in the development and implementation of a programme of work specifically tailored around being physically active and that meets the needs of identified students.
  • Establish a stable, caring, and supportive learning environment. 
  • Enable students to achieve their full learning potential. 
  • Facilitate students’ social, emotional, and moral development.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Liaise with the SENCo and provide support for staff around the needs of individual students. 
  • Liaise with teachers over subject specific work.  
  • Assist with individuals and small groups of students to further develop their literacy,  numeracy, ICT problem solving, social skills, emotional literacy and study skills.  
  • Ensure each student within the Holt Classroom has access to all activities and adapt these where necessary. 
  • Work with students who have special educational needs, learning difficulty, disability, or who have social and emotional difficulties. This work will be either be in small groups or individually. 
  • Plan, implement and deliver active support programmes, based around being physically active, for individuals or small groups. These may include anger management, self-esteem, resilience, and social skills. 
  • Keep written records of student development and progress within their active programmes and learning. 
  • Develop, maintain, and apply knowledge and understanding of students’ learning and social/emotional needs to ensure that support is given at an appropriate level. 
  • Undertake physical learning activities with students of varying abilities to ensure access to the curriculum.  
  • Assist in the preparation, organisation and maintenance of the classroom and the equipment.  
  • Attend and contribute to school staff meetings and in-service training events. 

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Uphold and actively support the school’s policies and procedures. 
  • Provide care and supervision of students within the classroom and outside learning areas. 
  • Accompany students on educational visits. 
  • Under the direction of the SENCo, assist in the development and the review of Profiles/My Plans/My Plan+/EHCPs for students with special educational needs. 
  • Use a variety of interpersonal techniques to establish supportive relationships with students,  parents, and carers under the guidance of SENCo
  • Have contact with all staff in school to pass on and receive information, advice, guidance, suggestions and ideas.  
  • Contact with parents / carers and other agency staff to provide support for students and give feedback on students’ progress. 
  • Work with local alternative provision settings to ensure that individual needs can be met.  
  • Source funds from local and national organisations and government to fund youth focussed   programmes for the students attending the Holt Classroom.  
  • Help victims of abuse and other trauma to manage their situation and experience through a therapeutic approach in the Holt Classroom.
